| Select Clips & Panel Discussion with the Filmmakers of
The Manzanar Fishing Club
A New Film Documenting the Untold Story
of the Largest Mass Detention in U.S. History |
|
| The California Historical Society will host special viewing of select clips from the documentary film The Manzanar Fishing Club and a panel discussion. This new film provides an historical account of a group of internees, held at the Manzanar War Relocation Center during WWII, who sought to regain a sense of dignity and freedom through the simple act of fishing.
Richard Imamura, screenwriter and one of the producers of The Manzanar Fishing Club, will be joined by internee fisherman Mas Okui, and local historian and author Stan Yogi for a panel discussion on the film and the issues it confronts. The presentation takes place at 5:30 pm, Thursday, November 3, 2011, at the California Historical Society (CHS) Museum, located at 678 Mission Street in San Francisco. Admission is free. For more information the public may call 415/357-1848 or visit www.californiahistoricalsociety.org.
The Manzanar Fishing Club is a feature-length documentary that chronicles the WWII internment of Japanese Americans at the Manzanar War Relocation Center from a unique perspective: through the eyes of those who slipped away under the cover of night to find freedom and adventure by fishing in the surrounding areas. These courageous few defied the armed guards, barbed wire and searchlights to break away from the camp –often for days at a time- to match wits with the prized trout of the Sierra Nevada's lakes and streams. By emphasizing the evacuees' personal stories, the film goes beyond the confinement itself and shows how a few were able to take back a bit of dignity and freedom. The film includes historic photographs and first-hand accounts of the experience as told thorough interviews with surviving internee fishermen.
The Manzanar Fishing Club began as a lecture, walking tour and artifacts exhibit to raise awareness of the internees who escaped the camp at night to take control of their lives, however briefly, before returning to captivity. |
